German and English also share many borrowings from other languages, especially Latin, French and Greek. Most of these words have the same meaning.

As a native English speaker who has learnt German, I am always surprised that other native speakers consider German ‘difficult’ to learn. The influence of other languages through trade, migration and colonization have created two languages which are similar in some ways and so different in others. While this may seem like ancient history, the shared roots of German and English are invaluable to know. Native English speakers have an advantage over most others as the basics of the Steven Frank, the author of The Pen Commandments claims that English has 500,000 words with German having about 135,000 and French having fewer than 100,000. But wait. A blog post for The Economist agrees that English is rich in vocabulary, but comparisons with other languages can’t be made for several reasons. Like English and Dutch, German forms part of the West Germanic languages.

When it comes to travel, Germans are world champions. As it turns out, so is the German language. Like English, German also has some rules for word flexibility, which allow the creation of new types of words which are immediately understood by other German speakers on the fly. For example, in English you can use the “nominalization” (noun-ifiying) process to create a noun from a verb or adjective. It will be easy for you to re­mem­ber that “hand” is Hand in Ger­man and mano in Span­ish, that “ten” is tien in Dutch and dieci in Ital­ian, or that “end” is Ende in Ger­man and fin in French. How­ever, dif­fer­ent lan­guages share dif­fer­ent amounts of vo­cab­u­lary with Eng­lish. And at least compared to other languages, it’s really not that difficult to pronounce once you’ve learned how to pronounce the words.

Polish is very distantly related to German as both are Indo-European language. Polish is a Slavic language, German is a Germanic language. They are very different.

As you’d imagine, learning about English’s loanwords from other languages is linked with the history of the English language itself. Because of its status as a global lingua franca, English is now much more of a lender than a borrower, but the ways in which English has contributed to other languages around the world is a recipe for another day.
