In May 2011, a virtually unknown strain of E. coli, known as O104:H4, made worldwide headlines when an outbreak in Germany sickened approximately 4,000 people and killed 50, including one American. The E. coli O104:H4 Test is a rapid latex agglutination test, designed solely for the presumptive identification of Escherichia coli serogroup O104 cultured on TSA agar plate. The epidemic originated from a bean and seed sprouts farm in Lower Saxony, and was caused by the O104:H4 strain – a highly antibiotic resistant, hybrid enteroaggregative – Shiga toxin producing E. coli strain (STEC). The infection was characterized by increased HUS (25%) and a higher mortality rate. A novel strain of Escherichia coli O104:H4 bacteria caused a serious outbreak of foodborne illness focused in northern Germany in May through June 2011. The illness was characterized by bloody diarrhea, with a high frequency of serious complications, including hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that requires urgent treatment.
